TORONTO, ON (February 18, 2021) - CF Sherway Gardens is approaching a significant milestone, serving as west-end Toronto’s pre-eminent shopping destination for fifty years. The centre first opened its doors on February 24, 1971, welcoming more than 20,000 shoppers on opening day. Since then, CF Sherway Gardens has transformed into one of Canada’s leading shopping centres featuring a diverse mix of retailers and dining options, establishing itself as a premiere destination for GTA residents to shop, gather and dine.
Even in challenging times, the centre is committed to marking this momentous occasion by giving back to the community it proudly calls home. Cadillac Fairview will be donating $200 on behalf of each CF Sherway Gardens employee to the Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere (FAME). This organization offers a range of support for family members and caregivers who have a loved one experiencing a mental health concern. From services including one-on-one counselling to specialized programs for children and youth, FAME is there to help combat mental health.

Redevelopment through the years
Throughout the past 50 years, the property has undergone significant revitalization to modernize and improve the shopper experience and offer the best for the community. From the early days, the original food court was one of North America’s first shopping centre food courts. In 2017, the centre reinvigorated its food offering by relocating and redesigning and reintroducing the Gourmet Fare as an open concept, second-level dining area featuring 15 merchants and 1,000 seats. The centre also features seven full-service restaurants throughout the property including Joey’s, the Keg, Cactus Club, Union Chicken, Beaumont Kitchen and Pickle Barrel and Saks Food Hall by Pusateri’s.
The centre also featured four indoor gardens to make guests feel like they were on an island. In the late 1980’s the property underwent its first major expansion which included adding a tented roof in the South wing that’s now become an iconic part of the city’s skyline. This unique canopy design was first-of-its kind earning merit awards for design.
In 2013, the centre announced a major $550 million renovation that added 210,000 square feet of space and 50 new stores that was completed in August 2017.
CF Sherway Gardens is home to many of the world’s desired brands including Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Indigo, Harry Rosen, Zara and Canada Goose’s experiential retail concept called The Journey - the first of its kind for the brand.
